Apple’s iPhone 11 was most-shipped handset in first half of 2020, report says

Apple’s iPhone 11 dominated worldwide smartphone shipments during the first half of 2020, according to new estimates from research firm Omdia, with the handset outperforming its next closest competitor by 26 million units.

According to fresh statistics from Omdia’s Smartphone Model Market Tracker, Apple shipped an estimated 37.7 million iPhone 11 units in the first half of the year. The figure compares to last year’s top-performing handset, iPhone XR, which shipped 26.9 million units during the same six-month period.

“A key driver for the success of iPhone 11 is the lower starting price. iPhone 11 launched $50 cheaper than the previous iPhone XR while adding significant hardware improvements, like a dual-lens camera. iPhone XR did not feature such upgrades,” Omdia said in a report Tuesday.

Other Apple products to make the top ten include the 2020 iPhone SE in fifth place with 8.7 million units shipped, iPhone XR in sixth

Apple accidentally approved malware disguised as Flash, new report finds

Apple accidentally approved common malware disguised as an update for Adobe Flash Player to run on macOS, according to a new report.

According to security researcher Patrick Wardle, Apple approved an app that contained code used by a well-known malware called Shlayer. Shlayer is a trojan downloader that spreads through fake applications, bombarding users with an influx of adware. Shlayer is the “most common threat” to Macs, cybersecurity and anti-virus firm Kaspersky said in 2019.

Wardle says this is the first time he knows of that Apple mistakenly notarized malware following the debut of its new notarization process. Apple announced the macOS notarizing process in 2019, requiring every app to be reviewed by Apple and signed by a developer before it can run on macOS, even if they’re being distributed outside the Mac App Store.

After discovering the malware, Wardle contacted Apple

Cloud technology great for security but poses systemic risks, according to new report

Although nearly 30 years old, cloud computing is still a “new” technology for most organizations. The cloud promises to reduce costs and increase efficiencies through storage and management of large repositories of data and systems that are theoretically cheaper to maintain and easier to protect.

Given the growing rush by organizations to move to the cloud, it’s no surprise that some policymakers in Washington are calling for regulation of this disruptive technology. Last year, Representative Katie Porter (D-CA) and Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), urged the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) to consider cloud services as essential elements of the modern banking system and subject them to an enforced regulatory regime. Their calls for this kind of oversight came in the wake of a major data breach of Capital One in which an employee of the financial institution was able to steal more than 100 million customer credit applications by exploiting a

In the past, Apple introduced Mac personal computers with Intel CPUs, equipped with Nvidia or AMD GPUs, but industry insiders pointed out that Apple has cancelled support for AMD GPUs in the macOS Arm 64-bit operating system, indicating that Apple will be adopted in the future. Silicon’s Mac personal computers may use a GPU developed and designed by Apple. Recently, the industry has reported that in addition to ‌Apple Silicon‌ processors, Apple’s
