Bezos’ Blue Origin launches unpiloted New Shepard capsule to edge of space

A Blue Origin New Shepard rocket boosted an unpiloted crew capsule to the edge of space Tuesday in the company’s 13th sub-orbital test flight, reaching an altitude of 66 miles and giving on-board experiments about five minutes of weightlessness before a picture-perfect parachute descent to Earth.

The capsule’s booster, meanwhile, carried out a rocket-powered landing on a nearby pad while experimental NASA sensors were put through their paces as part of a project to develop safer, more accurate guidance technology for upcoming moon landings in the agency’s Artemis program.

It was the seventh successful flight in a row for the rocket and capsule and the 13th overall for Blue Origin, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, as the company gears up to begin launching space tourists, researchers and other paying customers on up-and-down sub-orbital spaceflights.

Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin on Tuesday conducted the latest test flight of its rocket New Shepard at its facility in the West Texas desert.

The mission did not have passengers on board, although New Shepard launches with a capsule on top that is designed to carry as many as six people for a mission. Known as NS-13, this mission was the 13th test flight of the system – as well as a record seventh consecutive launch for the rocket booster carrying the capsule, as it has landed six times after prior missions.

NS-13 was originally scheduled to launch on Sept. 24, but an issue with the rocket’s power supply delayed the mission.

New Shepard is designed to carrying people on a ride past the edge of space, with the capsules on previous test flights

There’s another entrant in the startup race to provide financial services to Latin America’s small and medium-sized businesses.

Financial services have been a huge opportunity for startups coming out of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico in recent years, and now Xepelin, a new company from Chile, is looking to join the fray.

Xepelin’s founders, Sebastian Kreis and Guillermo Molina Carvallo, launched their company with the vision of creating a new kind of online bank for Latin America’s small businesses.

The company’s pitch to business owners depends on a variation of the lending tool known as factoring, where small businesses can take out loans based on the income they’re expecting to receive. In Latin America, where small businesses have limited avenues to traditional loans, according to Kreis, factoring represents a novel solution.

Xepelin already has a multimillion dollar credit line on the books
