PS5 Preorder Info: More Console Preorders Available Tomorrow

In the wake of the announcement of the PS5 launch date and price points, the long, tense search for a preorder has begun. Launching November 12 at $500 for the standard console and $400 for the digital edition, the PS5 went up for preorder right after the recent PS5 event, and since then, stock has sold out at all major retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop, and Target.

GameStop had a second wave of PS5 preorders available to preorder on September 25, both online and in stores. Once again, the retailer had a virtual queue. Multiple GameSpot staff members waited in the queue for more than an hour without any success, so online preorders apparently sold out very quickly once again. GameStop issued an update on Twitter confirming that PS5 stock sold out once again. This included a starter bundle that came with Demon’s Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate

Trophy System Gets A Makeover Ahead Of New Console Release

KEY POINTS

  • The 12-year-old Trophies system on PlayStation Network is getting a makeover
  • Changes include faster progression in lower levels, scale expansion, and higer value for platinum trophies
  • Players will get subtle notices when they are close to jumping a level

Before the PlayStation 5 era begins in November, the PlayStation Network is reformatting its Trophies system that has been around since 2008.

What has been a one to 100 scale for the past 12 years will be expanded to one to 999. To entice more participation, moving up in the lower levels will come at a faster pace.

Another significant upgrade is the increase in the value of platinum trophies. When players collect every trophy offered in a game, they are awarded a platinum trophy. Collected platinum trophies will now have a higher value when leveling up.

For gamers who are worried that their previously earned trophies from the

Xbox Game Studios has a record year heading into console launch

Microsoft said its Xbox Game Studios has so far enjoyed a record year in terms of the number of games it has launched ahead of the November debut of the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles.

Games marketing general manager Aaron Greenberg said in a blog today that Microsoft’s internal game studios have launched 15 games so far this year, 10 of which are brand-new titles. This count will get even better once the company integrates ZeniMax’s Bethesda Game Studios, which Microsoft acquired for $7.5 billion. Including Bethesda, Microsoft has 23 game studios now, with close to 5,000 developers, compared to 15 studios before the acquisition. Even before Bethesda, Microsoft was on a buying spree, snapping up many of those studios over the past few years.

In Microsoft games that have launched this year, players have logged 1.66 billion hours, which is the time it would take to walk

Xbox Is Primed To Reclaim Its Identity As A Console For RPGs

With Microsoft’s recent acquisition of ZeniMax Media–parent company for eight studios, including Bethesda–it feels like another step towards reclaiming an old identity for Xbox. Back in the days of the original Xbox and Xbox 360, the Xbox brand was known as the home for console ports of western RPGs. It’s an association that was lost with Xbox One, but thanks to the many acquisitions that Microsoft has made since 2018, it may be one that returns with Xbox Series X/S. And that association will only help Microsoft in this coming console generation, both in moving Xbox Series X/S units as well as selling Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions.

In June 2018, Microsoft acquired Forza Horizon developer Playground Games, which is now working on a brand-new Fable. Later, in November 2018, Microsoft announced it had acquired Wasteland developer inXile Entertainment, following up that it also acquired Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian

First PS5 photos show just how big Sony’s next-gen console truly is

Sony’s upcoming PS5 hardware has appeared at the FCC, providing us with the first close up photos of the next-gen console. The FCC has published a variety of images, showing the standard PS5 laying horizontally, the included cables, and the removable base that holds the console in both vertical and horizontal positions.

The photos also show just how big the PS5 truly is. We learned earlier this week that the PS5 is the biggest game console in modern history, even topping the Xbox One VCR-like shape and Sony’s own PS3. Sony released official dimensions during its PS5 event this week, but they don’t include the “largest projection” or the optional base measurements.

It’s clear from these FCC photos that it’s going to be a challenge to fit a PS5 into entertainment centers, just as it will be with the Xbox Series X. Both consoles appear to be designed to primarily
