Three commercial space technologies devoted to distance communications are receiving one of the highest industry honors — induction into the Space Technology Hall of Fame.

The accolade is awarded to those space technologies with “life-changing” potential and is meant to highlight the scientists, engineers and innovators behind the work, according to a statement from the Space Foundation, which manages the awards. The induction comes amid World Space Week 2020, which is celebrating how satellites improve life on Earth.

Cloud communication platform MessageBird raises $200 million at a $3 billion valuation

MessageBird, a cloud communication platform spanning AI-powered contact center software and APIs for developers, has raised $200 million in a series C round of funding led by Spark Capital. The company has now raised a total of $300 million and is valued at $3 billion.

The Netherlands-based company is perhaps best known for its Twilio-like platform that enables app makers and enterprises to add messaging, voice, SMS, and email functionality to their products through an API (application programming interface). This spares them the resource-intensive task of developing communications infrastructure and makes it easier for companies like Uber to offer text- and voice-based communication features inside their apps.

MIT researchers using superconducting quantum bits connected to a microwave transmission line have shown how the qubits can generate on demand the photons, or particles of light, necessary for communication between quantum processors.


The advance is an important step toward achieving the interconnections that would allow a modular quantum computing system to perform operations at rates exponentially faster than classical computers can achieve.

“Modular quantum computing is one technique for reaching quantum computation at scale by sharing the workload over multiple processing nodes,” says Bharath Kannan, MIT graduate fellow and first author of a paper on this topic published today in Science Advances. “These nodes, however, are generally not co-located, so we need to be able to communicate quantum information between distant locations.”

Louisiana Tech students are involved in an ongoing project that will help the Louisiana Department of Health create different much-needed items for the state’s COVID-19 health outreach activities.

The opportunity arose when Tech’s new Center for Health and Medical Communication was recently asked to join the LDH’s COVID-19 Communication-Health Promotion Advisory Council. The Center was then tasked with creating educational information not only on COVID-19, but also on other infectious diseases, such as the flu.

A collaborative effort between the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Engineering and Science, the Center for Health and Medical Communication was created in the Spring 2020 and falls under the University’s Research and Innovation Enterprise as a Research Center of Excellence.
