Meet The New Manjaro Community Edition PinePhone, Starting At $149

Between multiple versions of the PinePhone, the fantastic PineBook Pro and the development of PineTime and PineTab, there’s no question Pine64 has been on a roll. Its mobile phone endeavors, in particular, have garnered widespread development support and community adoption. Now it’s time for another Community Edition of the affordable Linux phone that will have users of a certain persuasion chanting “Btw I use Arch. . . on my phone!”

The short version: pre-orders for the brand new Manjaro Community Edition PinePhone should go live in mid-September, and fans of the Arch-based Linux distro have a lot to be enthusiastic about.

“Manjaro has offered support for PINE64 devices since the very beginning and the PinePhone is no exception in this regard,” says Pine64’s Lucasz Erecinski. “There are currently three Manjaro PinePhone build variants (Lomiri, Phosh and Plasma Mobile) for users to try out – all available for download from Manjaro’s downloads repository.”

The Manjaro team is designing a custom box for the new community edition, and of course the Manjaro logo will grace the back cover of the latest PinePhone (see photo, above).

As it did with the recent PostmarketOS version, the Manjaro edition will ship in two variants:

  • $149 — 2GB RAM; 16GB eMMC
  • $199 — 3GB RAM; 32GB eMMC (includes a bundled USB-C dock)

For an additional $50, the $199 model clearly has the strongest value proposition. This variant is called the convergence package, and ships with an additional 1GB of RAM and double the eMMC storage.

It’s also bundled with a USB-C dock equipped with 10/100 Ethernet, 2X USB type A ports, HDMI digital video output and power-in via USB-C.

It’s a natural fit for a desktop-centric OS like Manjaro.

What I find especially awesome is this: Pine64 will donate $10 per unit sold to the Manjaro development team. That’s a generous and not insubstantial amount. Hypothetically, if Pine64 sold 6000 units of the Manjaro Community Edition PinePhone, that would be more than sufficient revenue to bring on a full time developer, or finance a number of other productive endeavors.

Pre-orders for the Manjaro Community Edition PinePhone should go live in mid-September. To be notified when pre-orders go live, you can follow Pine64 on:
