Galaxy S20 FE isn’t a revolution in mobile tech, but it’s what 2020 calls for

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and S20 Ultra might be packed to the hilt with the latest, greatest tech, but they also come with sky-high prices to match. That makes them a tricky sell at a time when purse strings are tightening and rivals like OnePlus are making great phones  at more affordable prices. The Galaxy S20 FE (which stands for “fan edition”) aims to offer much of what you’ll find in the company’s top-end phones but with a few tweaks here and there in order to keep the price down.

In the September issue of the journal Nature, scientists from Texas A&M University, Hewlett Packard Labs and Stanford University have described a new nanodevice that acts almost identically to a brain cell. Furthermore, they have shown that these synthetic brain cells can be joined together to form intricate networks that can then solve problems in a brain-like manner.

“This is the first study where we have been able to emulate a neuron with just a single nanoscale device, which would otherwise need hundreds of transistors,” said Dr. R. Stanley Williams, senior author on the study and professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “We have also been able to successfully use networks of our artificial neurons to solve toy versions of a

A Rare Wall Street Downgrade

Something unusual has happened on Wall Street regarding Apple. Earlier this week, UBS issued a rare stock rating downgrade, from “buy” to “hold”.

To be fair, the change in opinion happened when coverage switched analysts within the same sell-side firm. Still, this could be a good opportunity to look at the less-than-bullish opinion from an expert on Apple’s stock. See bullet points below.

Counterpoints to bullishness

  • Service revenues linked to iPhone sales should decelerate. While services have risen over 20% per year since around 2016, product sales have increased in the low-single digits, and theorerically both trends should converge.
  • Shares tend to outperform ahead of the iPhone launch, and underperform after it. The analyst, therefore, believes in a repeat of the “sell the news” wave observed in previous years.
  • Valuation does not match growth trajectory. The analyst notes that a forward earnings multiple of 29x is “at 1.5 standard deviations

Twitter investigating after users spot mobile app prefers White faces

LONDON – Twitter says it’s investigating why its picture-cropping algorithm sometimes prefers White faces to Black ones.

The investigation comes after Twitter users noticed Black faces were less likely to be shown than White ones in image previews on mobile when the image contains a Black face and a White face.

The micro-blogging platform said it didn’t find any evidence of racial and gender bias when it tested the algorithm but conceded it had more analysis to do.

Parag Agrawal, Twitter’s chief technology officer, said Twitter analyzed the model when it shipped it, but said that it needs continuous improvement.

“Love this public, open, and rigorous test — and eager to learn from this,” he said on the platform.

The issue came to light after Colin Madland, a university manager
