Virginia vs. Virginia Tech game on Sept. 19 postponed by ACC due to COVID-19 issues

The matchup between Virginia and Virginia Tech – scheduled for Sept. 19 –  will be postponed to a later date, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced in a statement Saturday.

The ACC cited positive tests from the Virginia Tech football team as a reason for postponement, prompting the school to properly quarantine student-athletes. The conference adopted such protocols in advance for the 2020 season.

Virginia Tech also said in a school statement that the team would pause football activities for four days.

“The safety, as well as the physical and mental well-being of these young men and women entrusted to our care by their families remains our top priority,” Hokies athletic director Whit Babcock said in a statement. “While we share the disappointment of everyone who hoped to begin the football season against our in-state rival, we remain optimistic that a full ACC football schedule can be played thanks to the flexibility the present format permits.”

A replacement date has not been decided. The game between Miami (Fla.) and Louisville, also set for Sept. 19, will be moved to 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

In addition to the Virginia-Virginia Tech postponement, the Cavaliers’ game hosting Duke – originally scheduled for November 14 – will now be played Sept. 26 (when both teams had a bye week open date) and will serve as the program’s season opener.

Prior to the scheduling of the 2020 campaign, the ACC set out for each team to have two open dates to allow flexibility for coronavirus-related implications.
