It’s probably not the biggest security issue that Microsoft is dealing with right now but the software giant probably isn’t happy about it either way: This week, a torrent appeared online that contained the apparent source code for Windows XP, the extremely outdated Microsoft operating system that still runs on millions of computers around the world. The leaker(s) also threw in a little Bill Gates conspiracy-mongering, as a treat.

The torrent appeared on 4Chan earlier this week and has since broken out of the trash zone, falling into the hands of security pros and tinkerers alike. Gizmodo reviewed the files and while we haven’t done anything with them, numerous experts and other outlets have verified the files’ authenticity. Bill Gates Sr., 1925-2020: Microsoft co-founder’s father made his own mark on Seattle and the world

Bill Gates Sr., a respected lawyer, devoted civic leader, trusted mentor, and influential philanthropist who helped to shape Seattle’s tech industry even before his son co-founded Microsoft, died Monday of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 94.

“My father’s death is a tremendous loss for our family and the many people whose lives he touched. Dad lived a long and enormously meaningful life,” Bill Gates Jr. said in a statement issued by the Gates family.

“I never stopped learning from his wisdom, kindness, and humility. Melinda and I owe him a special debt because his commitment to serving the community and the world helped inspire our own philanthropy. Although he would be the last person to say it, my father’s compassion and generosity will live on in the foundation he helped build.”

  • The 10 wealthiest tech billionaires lost a combined $44 billion in net worth amid a tech sell-off that ended an 11-day rally.
  • Jeff Bezos saw the biggest personal drop at $9 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, and the wealthiest woman, his ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, is also on the list.
