Panasonic has made it way easier to use Lumix cameras as webcams

Panasonic has released an official Lumix webcam app, as first spotted by PetaPixel. The software, still in beta since its quiet release late last month, lets you plug your camera into your Mac or Windows machine and have it recognized as a video source in apps like Google Meet and Zoom. Panasonic’s official software replaces the workaround hack the company introduced back in June.

Panasonic’s workaround was necessary because of the webcam shortage during early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. But it was far more cumbersome than a native app, requiring you use Panasonic’s hack to remove the tethering app’s overlaid interface and then direct the live feed from the camera through an intermediary like Open Broadcaster Software (OBS).

Thankfully, that native app removes all that fuss and you can head over to Panasonic’s website here to download it. Here’s a

This story is part of Apple Event, our full coverage of the latest news from Apple headquarters.

When Apple’s 5G iPhone 12, or whatever it’s called, gets announced on Tuesday, Oct. 13, during the company’s online-only launch event, industry watchers will be looking closely to see how Apple sells us on 5G wireless, its new chips and cameras, and whatever other new features it might pack in. (Here are all the final iPhone 12 rumors we’ve heard, and the latest major leak.)

But it’s the design that may end up being its most important feature. The new iPhone is expected to shave the device’s curved edges into squares, much like those on the current iPad Pro.

In case you weren’t already spending too much time on Slack while you work from home, the company on Wednesday teased a slate of new features aimed at drawing you in further. Starting next year, by handing over your private link, you’ll be able to get direct messages on Slack from anyone from any company. The company is also exploring features that will let you instantly join or leave an unending audio call that is perpetually going on in the background of a channel, and upload asynchronous video with a feature similar to Instagram’s Stories.

The new push-to-talk, instant audio feature is aimed at replicating the brief conversations found in office settings, while the pre-recorded video messaging options look to provide more flexibility for companies with routine video meetings, the company said.

“An audio option in channels is another way we’re thinking that we can

Instagram makes old stories easier to find alongside new anti-bullying features

Instagram is adding new features to help users find old stories posted over the last three years and to reduce abusive behavior. The stories archive now includes a new monthly calendar view, which shows the days you posted each story, alongside a map which shows story locations, TechCrunch reports. Instagram also announced a pair of new anti-bullying features which attempt to automatically hide potentially abusive comments while discouraging users from posting them in the first place.

Given that stories are designed to disappear automatically after 24 hours, it’s likely surprising to many that Instagram has an archive of them going back years. The stories archive actually dates back to 2017 — the new calendar and map just offer a better way to find old stories. The archive is private, visible only to you, but there’s an option to re-share them publicly on your profile or stories feed. The new Stories

Arlo Introduces Pro 4 Security Camera With Easier Wi-Fi Setup, But Lacks HomeKit at Launch [Updated]

Accessory maker Arlo today introduced the Pro 4, a new version of its security camera that connects directly to Wi-Fi for easier setup as a standalone security solution, eliminating the need for a separate base station.

Like its Pro 3 predecessor, the Pro 4 features 2K video resolution with HDR, a 160-degree viewing angle, an integrated spotlight and siren, color night vision, two-way audio, and a wire-free, weather-resistant design. A removable, rechargeable battery continues to provide up to six months of battery life per charge.

Unfortunately, the Pro 4 is not compatible with HomeKit at launch, according to the Arlo website. The Pro 3 gained HomeKit support five months after it launched, so it is possible that the Pro 4 will receive HomeKit in a future software update. We’ve reached out to Arlo for comment on their HomeKit plans and we’ll update this story if we hear back.

Netflix update

  • Netflix has added a new tab called “New & Popular” to its connected TV app that focuses on the biggest current and upcoming titles on the service.
  • Netflix’s New & Popular tab has an all-new section called “Worth the Wait” that includes movies, shows, and specials that are up to 365 days from being released.
  • Netflix plans to start testing this new tab on the web before the end of the year.

One of Netflix’s persistent problems is that unless you know exactly what you watch to watch,  you might spend hours scrolling through menus. That’s not to say that it’s hard to find content relevant to your interests, but the home screen of the app can be overwhelming. Making matter worse is the fact that Netflix has always struggled to split its content up into easily-identifiable categories, but perhaps the latest update —

The Google Pixel couldn’t win at the high end, but the midrange isn’t any easier

Today, Google will announce the Pixel 5 and 4A 5G. Well, not so much “announce” as launch, since the company already told us these phones were coming when it announced the Pixel 4A in early August. We know what to expect because these phones have leaked every which way but Sunday. And Google has already told us what the Pixel 4A 5G will cost, too: $499.

About the only thing that isn’t widely confirmed as of this writing (late last night) is the pricing for the Pixel 5. There are strong rumors that it will clock in at $699, which lines up with the big takeaway I expect to come away with today. That would be this: Google is retrenching into the midrange this year instead of directly trying to compete with the flagships from Apple and Samsung.

Moving down in price would be more true to what the Pixel

Amazon’s new “Climate Pledge Friendly” badge identifies more sustainable products.

James Martin/CNET

Amazon customers looking for a greener online shopping experience now have an easier way to identify more ecologically sustainable products. On Wednesday, Amazon announced the rollout of its new “Climate Pledge Friendly” label, which will highlight items that have been certified by a wide range of partners as sustainable products.

The online retailer also created a dedicated storefront for the program, which lets shoppers either browse by category or search for specific products bearing the green label. Amazon said the badge can already be found on about 25,000 listings.

A number of outside organizations partnered with Amazon to certify these products as sustainable, including EnergyStar, Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance. Amazon also created its own program,
