Drive-thru times at fast-food chains slow by nearly 30 seconds as demand soars

As consumers increasingly pick up their fast-food orders from the comfort of their car, average drive-thru times across 10 chains slowed down by nearly half a minute, according to an annual study conducted by SeeLevel HX.

Drive-thru lanes have always been an important feature for fast-food restaurants, but the coronavirus pandemic has heavily shifted consumer preferences in favor of the easy pick-up option, which also appears more safe to consumers. Drive-thru visits increased by 26% in April, May and June, according to data from the NPD Group. Taco Bell said that it served an additional 4.8 million cars through its drive-thru lanes during its second quarter.

The abrupt change in consumer behavior has motivated restaurant chains like Starbucks and Chipotle Mexican Grill to add more drive-thru lanes to their restaurants.

Vulnerable supply chains introduce increasingly interconnected attack surfaces

Accenture Security lists five other “extreme but plausible threat scenarios in financial services” in a new report.

Financial institutions have interdependent supply chains that offer a “broad, target-rich attack surface that adversaries can undermine,” a new report from Accenture warns. The firm listed it as the latest security trend gaining significance.

The six threats identified by Accenture are:

  • Supply chains, which introduce increasingly interconnected attack surfaces
  • Credential and identity theft, which continue to accelerate
  • Data theft and data manipulation, which stem from new vulnerabilities and cybercriminal behaviors
  • Emerging technologies, especially deepfakes and 5G, advance cyberthreats
  • Destructive and disruptive malware attacks, which spur multiparty and cross-sector targeting
  • Misinformation that is shaking trust in retail and government-backed banks

Aftershock: COVID-19’s permanent impact on tech supply chains

The last time the world suffered a deep recession, producers of information technology devices tightened and shortened their supply chains, diversified where they could, and scaled-down both product quality and expectations to ensure their own financial survival. The results were largely seen as successful. How coronavirus convinced grocery chains to experiment with new tech

Grocery chain Giant Eagle turned one of its stores into a checkout-less shopping experience. A handful of Price Chopper stores in Missouri are offering shoppers access to an app that can scan items and tally up their order, allowing them to skip the checkout line. Wegmans piloted a self-checkout app at three stores prior to the pandemic, but rolled it out to 80 of its 103 stores this spring, as customers sought out contactless shopping.

The rapid shift to online grocery ordering during the pandemic has ushered in the next phase of grocery shopping. But grocers are investing in technology meant for stores, too. They’re launching innovative technology inside brick-and-mortar locations, where the bulk of consumers still shop. Even Walmart’s new membership program, Walmart+, will offer access to a tech-based perk: a smartphone app that lets customers skip the line at stores.
