Mini moon called 2020 SO to orbit Earth may be NASA Surveyor 2 rocket

CLOSE

One cosmic rock a half-mile wide could change our planet forever, unless we spot it well-ahead of time.

USA TODAY

An asteroid likely to get caught in Earth’s orbit and become a “mini moon” for several months may in fact not be an asteroid at all.

Dubbed 2020 SO, the object is on track to be pulled into Earth’s orbit in the coming weeks and circle the planet until it returns to its own track.

But instead of being space rock, experts think it is actually part of a rocket from a failed moon-landing mission in 1966.

“I’m pretty jazzed about this,” Paul Chodas, director of the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told The Associated Press. “It’s been a hobby of mine to find one of these and draw such a link, and I’ve been doing it for decades now.”

Tyra Banks gets called out by ‘DWTS’ viewers after explaining last week’s production flub again

The theme was “80’s night” on Monday’s Dancing With the Stars, but before the dancers traveled back three decades, host Tyra Banks took the audience back to last week. Last Monday, there was some confusion about which two couples were up for elimination after Tyra called the wrong names.

During last Monday’s live show, Banks claimed that there was an error in the control and later said, “I was reading my cards, but my cards were wrong.” She also took to Twitter immediately after the show to reiterate that the blame lays with production.

“We wanted to clear something up that happened last week while we were announcing the results,” Banks said at the top of Monday’s show. “What you did not see

No Man’s Sky’s next big update is called Origins and it’s coming out next week

No Man’s Sky has had several small but important updates this year, and another one is on the way next week. This latest update will be called Origins, and according to developer Hello Games, it’s “the beginning of something new.”

While the developer revealed very little about this new update outside of its name and that it will be released next week, there are a few clues. For one thing, Hello Games briefly compares the Origins update to the game’s earlier Foundation and Beyond updates, which helped reshape the game and adds huge new features. There’s no way to know if Origins will really be that big, but it certainly seems important.

Face-swap child porn brings charges; sinister use of technology called troubling

Christofer Haugen admitted to photo-shopping a girl’s face onto the body of a nude child; he’s also accused of sexually assaulting an incapacitated victim.

WYOMING, Mich. — A man flagged by Facebook for sharing sexually abusive material is facing several felony charges linked to child pornography, including a photo-shopped image depicting one girl’s face on the nude body of a different girl.

The photo-shopped image, also referred to as ‘face swapping,’ has Christofer James Haugen facing up to 20 years in prison.

Haugen, 42, came on police radar earlier this year when Facebook reported a user for sharing child sexually abusive material on their site, court records show.

The account name was Christofer Haugen and an IP address used to upload the material came back to Haugen’s home in Wyoming, a state police trooper wrote in a probable cause affidavit.

“One of the CSAM pictures had the face of a

Artificial intelligence drives car-insurance claims estimates before the tow truck is called

On a typical day, about 80,000 U.S. drivers have accidents serious enough to warrant calling their insurers. After the initial shock comes a predictable sequence of worries: Was anyone hurt? Am I at fault?

The driver’s first call is often to the insurance company, which leads to the next questions: How long will it take to get an estimate, get my car into the shop and then get it back on the road?

The time it takes to settle auto insurance claims is being shortened, and the accuracy of initial estimates is improving, because U.S. insurers now use artificial intelligence to generate repair estimates.

The latest technology powered by AI is much different from the “virtual claim” you might have filed after your last fender-bender. About five years ago, photo-based estimates became increasingly common. Insurance companies sometimes had customers download an app that helped them provide consistent photos, but some

Representative Rashida Tlaib said Friday that police were called on her while she waited to enter a Michigan Amazon fulfillment center to observe working conditions.

Tlaib and Dingell have expressed concern about the working conditions at Amazon facilities. In May, the two representatives called for a federal investigation into the online retail company’s coronavirus mitigation protocols after receiving complaints from employees at the Romulus center. On Friday, Tlaib and Dingell said they were asked to observe conditions at the center by both workers and Amazon.

“.@DebDingell and I waited for 1.5 hours at @Amazon’s Romulus facility to check on worker safety at the request of workers and the company itself. They let us in, but not before

  • Rep. Rashida Tlaib said in a tweet Friday that Amazon called the police on her and Rep. Debbie Dingell after they showed up at a Michigan warehouse to check on workers’ safety.
  • The Democratic lawmakers, both from Michigan, had come at the request of workers and the company itself, and were waiting for more than an hour, Tlaib said.
  • Tlaib said they were eventually let in and both said they would share more soon.
  • Tlaib and Dingell have previously raised concerns about worker safety and called for a federal investigation into Amazon’s warehouse safety practices.
  • “There was an unfortunate misunderstanding when one of our night shift security guards was not expecting external visitors to be filming onsite and was not aware of the identity of those filming

China Just Called Trump’s Bluff on TikTok

(Bloomberg Opinion) — Imagine a bidder wanting to buy KFC, but being told the deal might not include the Colonel’s 11 secret herbs and spices. That’s effectively what Beijing has told the list of U.S. companies keen to purchase short-video app TikTok: The key ingredients may be out of reach.

ByteDance Inc., it decided, was a risk to national security and the Chinese company’s main product for international markets had to be sold. For reasons that remain confounding, Satya Nadella entered the fray and Microsoft Corp. put in a bid. Soon, suitors were apparently lining up to buy the hip new product that claims 100 million U.S. downloads. A short deadline — Sept. 15 — helped build a sense of urgency. TikTok is essentially going through
