Congress made a lousy case for breaking up Big Tech

The report also recommends requiring the FTC to collect more data and report on the state of competition in various sectors. And it says the FTC should conduct retrospectives to study whether its past decisions to approve or block mergers were correct. These kinds of studies are also long overdue and would make enforcement officials better at their jobs.

The FTC is currently engaged in a special review of every acquisition by the Big Five tech companies (those listed above, plus Microsoft) over the last decade. That process should be extended to other sectors and repeated on a regular basis.

Lastly, the report’s proposals for how to increase data portability might work very well for simple forms of data (such as a user’s social graph), which are easier to standardize. If consumers can easily take their data along with them, it will be easier for them to switch to new

House anti-trust chair says breaking up Facebook-Instagram would be right move

Following the 349-page report by the U.S. House of Representatives’ subcommittee on anti-trust, released yesterday afternoon, the chair of the committee, Democratic rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island, on Wednesday said he thinks it would be a good idea ot separate Instagram from Facebook, according to Reuters.

Cicilline told Reuters in an interview today that “Facebook should not have been allowed to buy Instagram,” according to the account by Reuters staff.

“I would be comfortable with unwinding that. I think that’s the right answer,” Cicilline told the news service, referring to Facebook’s purchase of Instagram for $737 million in 2012.

In the report issued Tuesday, Cicilline and staff said that buying Instagram was part of Facebook’s removal of competition in the social networking market. Facebook has become so dominant that the only real competition is between Facebook and its own properties, including Instagram, said the committee.

“Facebook has tipped the

FTSE 100 Technical Outlook Channel Support at Risk of Breaking Soon

(MENAFN – DailyFX) FTSE Technical Highlights:

  • Buying interest towards bottom of channel is waning
  • Channel break seen as likely to lead to retest of March low

Recently, the FTSE traded towards the bottom of a channel that has been building since June. The price action, however, suggests that the days for the channel could be numbered with what appears to be a growing lack of interest by buyers to buy into weakness.

The area right around 5770 has held on three occasions in the past month, a break below may also push the index through the lower side of the channel. A break beneath the lower parallel will require a decline beneath ~5660.

At that juncture, having left the orderly confines of the descending channel, an acceleration is seen as likely with the March lows under 5000 potentially coming into view. For this to happen, though, we will almost

Facebook said Thursday it removed more than 1 million groups over the past year for breaking the platform’s rules, and took down more than 13 million posts for violating specific policies on organized hate and hate speech.

This is the first time Facebook has released statistics on its enforcement of community standards inside groups. Facebook’s groups have been targeted by critics in recent years for their roles as hubs for political extremism, conspiracy theories and misinformation. The data came from an internal review and was not audited by outside experts, the company said in a blog post.

It said around 9 in 10 pieces of content removed from groups was found by the company’s automated systems.

Facebook pivoted toward groups in 2017, with a goal of connecting 1
