Qualcomm, PC partners take on Apple with new 8cx Gen 2 5G laptop chip

The future generation of PC chips from Qualcomm is here — and Acer and HP will soon sell products using the technology as Apple gears up for similar computers of its own. 

Qualcomm on Thursday at the IFA electronics show in Berlin unveiled the second generation of its 8cx processor for Microsoft Windows laptops and 2-in-1 devices.

Qualcomm brings 5G to Always On, Always Connected PCs with debut of Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2

Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G compute platform to bring 5G next-generation wireless technology to Always On, Always Connected PCs. 

Speaking to virtual attendees of the IFA conference in Berlin this year, Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon said that COVID-19 has forced many of us to rethink how we study and work.

Amon says the pandemic has become a “profound confirmation to drive wireless technologies forward, and we must rise to this challenge.”

According to the executive, Qualcomm predicts that over 750 million 5G-enabled smartphones will ship by 2022, and there will be over three billion 5G connections globally by 2025, making up 45% of all mobile traffic. 

As many of us are now working remotely, 5G is also expected to play a “critical role in economic development over the next decade or more.”

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 is a faster ARM CPU for PCs

Qualcomm is doubling down on its investment with Microsoft’s Windows platform. With the company’s Snapdragon silicon found on a broad array of Android smartphones and tablet, Qualcomm is now launching its second generation of premium always-connected PC processors at the IFA trade show in Berlin.

The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G compute platform will be Qualcomm’s second system-on-a-chip architecture for Windows 10 devices that supports 5G mobile broadband connectivity.

“Working remotely is the new reality, and more businesses are looking to quickly and securely connect their employee base, accelerating the need for always on, always connected PCs that are thin, light and truly mobile, equipped with blazing fast 5G cellular and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity,” Qualcomm’s senior director of product management Miguel Nunes said in a statement.
