Stunning Ferrari rival leaked before debut

Images of the new Maserati MC20 supercar have leaked online ahead of the model’s official debut.

Pitched as a rival to the likes of Ferrari’s F8 Tributo and the Lamborghini Huracan, the MC20 represents an important chapter in Maserati’s fabled history.

The machine borrows design elements from some of Maserati’s recent hits, including the GranTurismo coupe and MC12 supercar.

While those models were powered by Ferrari-sourced engines with links to the Ferrari California and Enzo Ferrari, the MC20 has a new engine developed in-house by Maserati.

Called Nettuno, the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 uses Formula 1-inspired ignition tech to develop an impressive 463kW and 730Nm.

The midship engine sends drive to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission – possibly the same gearbox as the new Porsche 911 Turbo.

Many websites and social media accounts published official images of the car ahead of an event in Modena tomorrow.

Dramatic upward-opening doors, lashings of carbon fibre and supercar-spec ceramic brakes lend exotic appeal to the MC20.

But those features also mean the car won’t be cheap, likely to cost more than $250,000 when it arrives in Australia in 2021.

Full details surrounding the MC20 will come with its official release later this week.
