Transfers have been integral to Texas Tech’s success on the hardwood. Now, Matt Wells is using the same approach on the gridiron.

Sometimes, the process for taking a transfer is filled with homework and evaluation, Texas Tech football coach Matt Wells explained.

And sometimes, things are much less complicated, like when former Arizona standout linebacker Colin Schooler hit the transfer portal last month after the Pac-12 shut down football.

Wells immediately flashed back to last year’s game at Arizona, and asked for Schooler’s jersey number.

“My first recollection is, ‘Yeah, that’s No. 7. We’ll take him,’” Wells said this week. “It went about that quick.”

OK, there was a little more involved, Wells admitted. By the time he got to the third quarter of the game tape, where Schooler recorded 8 tackles including 1.5 for losses, Wells knew his first instincts were right.
