The Technology 202: The White House gathering with state attorneys general could escalate tensions between Trump and Silicon Valley

“Online censorship goes far beyond the issue of free speech, it’s also one of protecting consumers and ensuring they are informed of their rights and resources to fight back under the law,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement earlier this week. “State attorneys general are on the front lines of this issue and President Trump wants to hear their perspectives.”

The White House summit builds on an executive order that Trump signed just a few months ago, which targeted a key legal shield granting tech companies broad immunity from lawsuits for the videos, photos and posts shared on their services, as well as their content moderation decisions. Tech companies have long denied the allegations of bias, which have been made with little evidence, and a prominent tech industry group has challenged the constitutionality of that order.

An escalation of anti-conservative bias claims could drum up support among

Apple’s first Mini-LED device to be new iPad Pro, predicts Kuo

The first Apple device to feature a Mini-LED display will be a new iPad Pro, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted in a new research note seen by MacRumors and AppleInsider. Kuo reports that Mini-LED display components will be mass-produced in the fourth quarter of this year, though it’s unclear when the new iPad Pro could actually release. Last year, Kuo predicted a third-quarter 2020 launch for the new iPad Pro with improved display technology. Apple last updated its iPad Pro lineup back in March.

Apple has long been rumored to be developing six devices with the new display technology, which offers similar benefits to OLED — like localized dimming for deeper blacks and higher contrast — without the downside of burn-in. It does this by using an array of thousands of tiny LEDs as a backlight, which can be turned on and off individually to offer a sharper

Microsoft And Shell Announce New Partnership To Use Artificial Intelligence And Tech To Reduce Carbon Emissions

Tackling carbon emissions is one of the biggest challenges faced by the world today. For big business, this means making a strategic and managed move towards increasing the use of renewable energy sources, as well as creating efficiencies across all aspects of their operations.

It’s a difficult task to manage alone, even for an enterprise on the scale of tech giant Microsoft or energy titan Shell. But working together creates new possibilities that go further than what it is likely they could accomplish individually. Beyond meeting their own zero-carbon commitments, there’s the opportunity to help other companies within their vast ecosystems of customers and suppliers to meet their environmental and safety goals, too.

This was the topic of a conversation I had this week with Judson Althoff, Microsoft’s executive vice

New MacBook Pro Leak Reveals Apple’s Exciting Update

Apple is set to improve the display on more new products next year, with a brighter display destined for the likes of the iPad and MacBook Pro machines.

The latest details on the use of mini-LED screens come from noted industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Erik Slivka reports:

Kuo says that while Epistar had been predicted to be the exclusive supplier of mini-LED chips for Apple products in 2021, Sanan Optoelectronics has experienced better than expected development on the technology and will also begin supplying Apple in 2021 rather than the previously estimated timeframe of 2022.”

Kuo’s expectation is that the previous estimates

Nokia’s new phones pack huge screens for dirt cheap prices

Nokia’s past couple of generations of Android phones have been very much focused on budget and its latest products — the Nokia 2.4 and 3.4 are no exception.

The 2.4 is the cheaper of the pair, coming in at only £99. US pricing is yet to be confirmed, but that price converts to around $127. For that low price, you get a massive 6.5-inch 1,600×720-pixel display, with a teardrop notch for the front-facing camera.

The single rear camera has a 13-megapixel resolution, but has an additional depth sensor for taking those artfully out of focus portrait images, as well as a night mode for taking shots in low light. It also includes a 4,500mAh battery, a 3.5mm headphone jack and either 2 or 3GB of RAM, depending on the variant you go for.

So no, it’s not

The Latest: Canada reaches vaccine agreement with companies

A civic staff in protective suit arrives to disinfect an apartment where one of the residents tested positive for COVID-19 in Kolkata, India, Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020. The nation of 1.3 billion people is expected to become the coronavirus pandemic’s worst-hit country within weeks, surpassing the United States.

LONDON — Pharmaceutical giants GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi have agreed to provide Canada with up to 72 million doses of their potential COVID-19 vaccine as governments buy up supplies of unproven treatments in hopes of ensuring supplies of whatever works.

On Tuesday, the companies reiterated their commitment to make the vaccine affordable and available globally.

“Both companies have significant R&D and manufacturing capability worldwide and are already working hard to scale up production,” Roger Conner, president of GSK’s vaccine unit, said in a statement. “This announcement from the Government of Canada supports our ongoing efforts.”

The agreement with Canada follows

Trump Jump-Starts Misinformation on Ginsburg’s ‘Dying Wish’

President Trump routinely passes along false and misleading information that has been circulating online. On Monday, he appeared to be the one starting it.

Shortly before Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, she made a request about what should happen to her seat on the Supreme Court. “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed,” Justice Ginsburg said, according to NPR, which reported that the 87-year-old justice dictated the note to her granddaughter, Clara Spera, in the final days of her life.

But during a “Fox & Friends” interview on Monday morning, President Trump claimed, without evidence, that Justice Ginsburg’s “dying wish” might actually have been written by a top Democrat like Representative Adam Schiff of California, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York or Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California.

“I don’t know that she said that, or if that was written out

Amazon’s new Alexa trick for Echo was made for sharing. Here’s how it works

Your friends are always gushing about the cool things you’ve programmed your Amazon Echo to do — from turning off all the lights and TV when you leave the house to starting the coffee maker the moment you dismiss your alarm. And with a brand-new feature for the Alexa assistant, you’ll be able to share your custom routines with friends and family in less than 30 seconds.

Here’s why that’s great for everyone. Let’s say one of your time-saving routines comes up in conversation. Instead of you detailing exactly how you set up every step, which is time-consuming for you to explain and for the other person to follow — you’ll be able to just transfer the whole bundle using the app. Keep in mind that some routines may be better for sharing than others, especially

Trump wavers on TikTok deal as companies push conflicting messages

Trump, for his part, said the deal means Walmart and Oracle are purchasing TikTok outright — in line with his original demand that a U.S. company buy TikTok to satisfy concerns that U.S. user data could be shared with the Chinese government.

“They are going to buy it. They’re going to have total control over it. They’re going to own the controlling interest,” he told reporters. “And if we find that they don’t have total control, then we’re not going to approve the deal.”

But Oracle and Walmart are not buying TikTok and they will not own a controlling interest, according to the deal as negotiated. The companies said over the weekend that they will become minority investors in TikTok Global, owning a combined 20 percent of the new entity. Oracle will own 12.5 percent to Walmart’s 7.5 percent.

Trump also told reporters that ByteDance would have no role in
